TAPESTRY OR NEEDLEPOINT - What's the difference ?

What is the difference between Tapestry and Needlepoint ?

Tapestry Kit OR Needlepoint Kit ...

Both Tapestry and Needlepoint are wonderfully relaxing pastimes, a colour printed design on canvas, OR perhaps from a chart onto plain canvas, stitched with tapestry wool or a combination of threads.

Kits are available for beginners and experienced stitchers.

So what is the difference ? ...

Tapestry Kits rely on a few basic types of stitch, the two main forms being 'Half Cross Stitch' and 'Tent Stitch/Continental Stitch', both of which have the same consistent appearance at the front of the work and are very easy to achieve. Tapestry kits are stitched in Tapestry Wool thread.

Needlepoint Kits can usually be stitched in basic tapestry stitches if preferred, but instructions included in kits often specify various additional (usually optional) stitching techniques which create texture and added interest, with clear instructions provided to achieve the finished effect. Some needlepoint kits also include different threads, in addition to tapestry wools, for added depth, detail and finish.

Today many kits are termed ‘Tapestry Needlepoint Kits’, or 'Needlepoint Tapestry Kits' without explanation, which can be confusing and is often incorrect ... however product descriptions should detail precisely the type of wool/yarn provided in a kit, relevant stitching information and imagery of the finished project for clarity.

Generally this mixed term means that the project can be stitched in traditional standard tapestry stitching if preferred, with additional needlepoint instructions if appropriate; therefore Tapestry or Needlepoint.

An experienced knowledgeable source will clearly detail whether needlepoint stitches are required in a project, the stitch techniques used and the type of thread included in a kit, as this is vital when making an informed selection.

All kits come supplied with the essentials: canvas fabric, all yarns required, needle, clear stitch instructions and 'how to stitch' guides, and a design image for reference. Many come with a reference chart too.
